Working From Home

I don't know if it's helpful and I do not want to say I am an expert on anything at all but - I am a freelancer with teenage kids. I have been self-employed for 16 years and worked from home for 8 of those. My husband has been split between part-time work and freelance writing. For the last 5 I have been home-educating one child, and apart from my mum helping out when I did have to actually go to work, I have never had any childcare. (This was not by choice, was not ideal and definitely impacted on how much money I made - but I/we survived.) These are things I have learned along the way, offered in the hope that they might help someone.

What Is Networking?

Networking. We’ve all heard of it but what exactly is it? Fancy business breakfasts or relaxed coffee shop meets? Well the answer is it can be both. If you ask Google to give you an answer you’re greeted with ‘The action or process of interacting with others to exchange information and develop professional or social contacts.’ Now doesn’t that sound fun? No, we don’t think so either.

Why Should You Network?

When was the last time you attended a networking event? And by that we don’t mean a coffee with a close friend who sometimes gives you business advice, we mean a focused event to meet and mingle with other business professionals. If your answer to that question is never then you aren’t alone, and now could be the time to change that.

There’s a perception that networking is merely pushy business people exchanging business cards  and building favours. As we touched on in our last article, it’s about building long-term relationships with a like-minded group of people. It’s about making those mutually-beneficial connections to drive the success of each other’s businesses.
